Thank You FDA!

On Sept 30, 2010, the friendly gubment agency, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) announced that all drug manufacturers must stop selling their version of single ingredient colchicine. Colchicine is a drug that has been used for many years to treat gout. a painful and sometimes debilitating condition resulting from too much uric acid in the blood stream. The excess uric acid forms crystals in the joints, causing a very severe inflammatory arthritis.

I have been a physician for 30 years and have prescribed colchicine for at least that long. It works. It is relatively safe when properly prescribed, and the many generic versions available were dirt cheap. In a nutshell, colchicine was a salvation for many sufferers of gouty arthritis.

Well I had not paid much attention to this monkey business until today when a guy with gout told me he was having trouble finding colchicine. I got to calling around and talking to pharmacists and here's the deal:

The FDA stopped the production of generic colchicine. In its place, a couple of outfits called Mutual Pharmaceutical and URL Pharma now produce an "approved" version of colchicine. It is called COLCRYS and guess what...it's the same damned thing as the old colchicine. The difference is that a 30 count of 0.6 mg COLCRYS tablets will cost you $170 per script. So now instead of a whole bottle of colchicine for a few bucks, gout sufferers will now have to start paying over 5 dollars a pill. A couple of disgusted pharmacists told me they are doing the same thing with potassium supplements.

This will result in a bunch of people no longer being able to buy colchicine. The cost of health care just went UP! UP! UP! This is just one more example of REGULATION by Warshington DC! When oh when are we going to force the gubment to do away with ridiculous and burdensome agencies such as the FDA? This in my opinion is an outrage!

  1. That's just terrible. But where do we start in changing such things?

    Right Truth

  2. Sounds like the albuterol CFC inhalers. Instead of $5 inhalers that actually work, now it's $40+ HFA inhalers that don't. Fortunately, the Primatene Mist inhalers are still on the market - for a little while anyhow.

  3. Well the CFC inhalers came along so we wouldn't destroy the ozone layer. So now people with asthma and COPD are paying through the nose for a damned HOAX.

  4. fatal is that picture must be horrible to go through that

  5. Even though they acted late for this drug, we must be thankful to FDA for stopping producing colchicine. It's not too late to save.
